Tanzania - Current Activities
EWB-SFP and NGEDEA are working together to plan the next phases of the project, the implementation of the water distribution system.
All distribution system details have been developed in conjunction with the community to obtain proposal approval, including the amount and location of provided water, the phased installation approach, and most importantly, the system cost.
The distribution system design takes water from the new well in CCM subvillage to two 15,000 gallon tanks located above CCM subvillage and then distributes it through a pipe network to 17 tap stands throughout the sub villages of Kivukoni, CCM, Maguland and Shuleni. The system supplies 5 gallons of potable water per person per day.
The water distribution system pump will be solar powered. EWB-SFP and NGEDEA will work with a local Tanzania solar and pump vendor in order to support the Tanzanian solar industry and to maximize local knowledge transfer.
In parallel with the technical design/implementation and fundraising activities, an ongoing effort will be conducted to transfer project ownership to the villagers by instituting a water committee. The committee will regulate the water distribution system operation and maintenance.
The estimated system cost is $100,000. Currently, EWB-SFP has raised $45,000. We hope to raise another $55,000 by June 1st so that equipment and material can be bought and construction can begin during the upcoming summer months.
One EWB-SFP volunteer will spend three months in Ngelenge this summer to facilitate the project while working closely with the community. Four other EWB-SFP teams will travel for three weeks at a time to help hold community meetings, oversee construction and provide training.
All EWB-SFP travelers are volunteers. They are using personal vacation time for this trip and are paying for their own travel to Tanzania.
