Projects - Sri Lanka
EWB-SFP is working with EWB-Puget Sound Professionals (EWB-PSP) and Asiana Education Development (AED), a non-governmental organization in Sri Lanka that has operated schools for children in under-served communities for almost ten years. AED has enlisted the support of EWB-USA for engineering and construction assistance to develop 8 day-schools and 2 boarding schools for children who lost their parents in the tsunami. The projects include the building structures, site layout, water and sanitary infrastructure and other sustainability features (native materials, rainwater harvesting etc.).
EWB-SFP is currently working on the Kalapuwa Sri Boys' Home (KSBH) project.
Faced with an aggressive project schedule the design team had to quickly integrate themselves with the building materials, construction techniques, and design criteria indigenous to Sri Lanka. As Architects Without Borders finalized the architecture, the design team coordinated with the owner, the project general contractor, and other available references to familiarize themselves in all of these areas. With constructability at the forefront of the design team’s objectives, schematic designs were developed to meet the architectural constraints.
The Phase 1 portion of the KSBH includes approximately 25 single and double story huts that will house the older boys. The Phase 2 part of the KSBH includes the larger multiple story administration, dorms, dining hall, kitchen, and guest quarters. Phase 1 is currently under construction and Phase 2 is being designed.
